ART + WINE + CHEESE: Happy Birthday to the famous artist MAN RAY who revolutionized modern photography and was a leading figure in the Dada and Surrealist Movements
MAN RAY was born on this day in 1890 in Philadelphia PA as Emmanuel Radnitzky. He was a pioneering American artist who played a vital role in the Dada and Surrealist movements. Relocating to Paris in 1921, he revolutionized photography with darkroom innovations like solarization and cameraless “rayographs”. He also created iconic sculptural assemblages and experimental films, leaving a massive impact on 20th-century art.

Marsha Staiger is an artist and teacher who lives, works and creates in Alexandria, VA. Marsha is an acrylic painter, who has been working from her studio at The Torpedo Factory for over 21 years. After painting for many years, Marsha says, “I love to paint. I love color. My process is a meditation and a struggle.”

Kim T. Richards lives in beautiful Loudoun County, VA, and shows her work in the Washington DC region. Growing up in Brooklyn, NY, Kim had opportunities to see great art at the many museums in the city from a very young age. Inspired to pursue a career in art, Kim attended Parsons School of Design where she received classical drawing and painting training, earning a BFA in Illustration.

Art Collector and Fine Art Appraiser Jeff Trafidlo will be at Nepenthe to discuss one of his favorite artists—PURVIS YOUNG(American 1943-2010). Young was an American artist of Bahamian descent whose art often blended painting and drawing with collaged elements.

Darlene R. Taylor is a Master Instructor and co-faculty advisor to the Sterling A. Brown English Society at Howard University. She is also a multidisciplinary artist and fiction writer. Her creative works in fiction and mixed media collage, examine silences in historical archives and reclaim narratives of Black life.

Kali Jones, from Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans, has been collecting, admiring and examining fine art by Black Artists from around the world her entire life. Thirty years ago, her parents opened the Stella Jones Gallery to create a space where artists and collectors could come together around Black excellence.
ART + WINE + CHEESE: Art History Teacher KARA SANDOVAL discusses the career and artworks of ROMARE BEARDEN
Romare Bearden’s masterpiece artwork, The Piano Lesson, is back on view at Nepenthe Gallery and local Art History teacher KARA SANDOVAL will lead a discussion about the legendary artist and his career. Along with The Piano Lesson, which inspired the Pulitzer-Prize winning play “The Piano Lesson” by August Wilson, the artwork Conjunction by Romare Bearden will also be on view.
