Thomas Sully, born in England in 1783, inherited the mantle from Gilbert Stuart as America’s preeminent portraitist.  Nepenthe Gallery is proud to exhibit one of his most important paintings of George Washington. This work is one of four replicas Sully painted after Stuart’s enduring portrait of our nation’s first President.
