Doug graduated with a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he concentrated on both computer graphics and scientific illustration.
Having studied art and technology in the 1980s, he spent many years after graduating, bridging the gap between both fields. He worked in the magazine industry as it shifted from paste-up to desktop publishing, then early web development, and finally focusing on digital illustration, and 3D graphics.
By day, Doug worked as Graphics and Illustration Director at a magazine, but wanted to use more of his artistic skills, so, began freelance illustrating, which soon developed into a second full-time job for about 20 years.
His work has been featured in ‘The Complete Guide to Digital Illustration,’ National Geographic Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, Library of Congress, Discovery, The Washington Post, and dozens of others publications and websites, and has won numerous awards.
After so many years in the digital arts, he felt a need to brush up on his drawing skills, so, he enrolled in anatomy and figure drawing with Rob Liberace at the Art League of Alexandria—which led to portrait painting classes with Danni Dawson .
While taking classes at the Art League Doug saw classes for plein air landscape painting, signed up, and hasn’t looked back since.
“I enjoy painting outdoors and during inclement weather I paint in my studio.
Lately, I’ve become intrigued with the possibilities of using ai as a tool for generating reference images, so, I’m currently embarking on wherever that may take me!”
Doug has exhibited in LA, and Chicago, as well as many local venues, including,Georgetown [DC], Potomac, Alexandria, Bethesda, Crystal City, Takoma Park, and Rockville.
